My Story Our Story

Reflections:

Olivia and I : I felt like we learnt a lot out of my big idea this term and it gave us a better understanding on some facts and figures about different countries. One of the most interesting thing that I learnt was that a baby is born in Pakistan every 7 seconds.

Angela and Zoe: there presentation was about human rights and refugees. I enjoyed it because it was a really interesting topic and the gave you a lot of information to choose from and discover about a topic or question.

Jessie: Jessie’s big idea was about the South Sudan hunger. With her presentation she thought outside of the box and instead of doing 4 posters she created a cube that made you even more interested. One of the things she did well was she created a mini book comparing her life to Joseph’s who is a little boy that moved to Uganda because of the South Sudan hunger strike.

This subject is about how your family migrated to Australia and my Pop migrated to Australia from the Netherlands, and this is a little bit of information about the ship he came on.

Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt

Between 1950 and 1963, the Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt was in  Australian waters quite a lot. She mainly carried Dutch migrants to Australia. Stoping at Melbourne, Sydney and Fremantle. Most of the passengers moved to Australia to escape the aftermath of world war II. Others were looking for a new life.

Facts:
Service Speed: 17 knots                         Shipping Lane: Nederland line
Weight:19,787 tons gross                      Dimensions: 185.4×22.8m

The Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt was named after the Dutch statesman of the 16th century.

The JVO  was the biggest diesel run ship built in Holland. (At the time). When she was launched she could accommodate 770 passengers, in 4 classes. It also could hold 360 crew members. That is 1130 people altogether.
It is a very popular ship amongst the Dutch immigrants from the Netherlands to Australia.

But as the second world war dawned, she was demanded by the British. And made many departures and arrivals  to/from Australia. In October 1945. The ship was refurbished and started to travel on it’s original route.

The JVO is very well known in the Dutch immigration history. Making 44 voyages in total. Her first departure was from Amsterdam on the 5th of September and arrived in Melbourne on the 9th of October 1950.

This is a photo of my family tree if you would like to see more come and ask me.
