MATHS IN A WATERMELON

Looking at this title you may be thinking how is there maths involved in  growing and selling a watermelon. WELL LET ME EXPLAIN.

HOW IS MATHS INVOLVED IN GROWING A WATERMELON?

Well actually there is quite a lot of maths involved in growing a watermelon such as……

when you grow a watermelon you have to water it obviously and it takes 100 gallons to grow a watermelon and because 1 gallon is equivalent to 4.5 litres it takes 450 litres to grow 1 watermelon

when you grow a watermelon you have to put into consideration of how long it will take to fully grow so this is maths because you have to wait 120 days.

You also need to put into consideration of how long the seed will take to grow. in this case it will take 10 days for the seed to sprout so add 10 days onto 120 days = 130 days

Another one is  the size and shape of when you want to pick your watermelon so you will have to grow it a similar shape to the other watermelons for when you sell them, and also you don’t want your watermelon to be the size of a bouncy ball so you have to get it the right size.

There are lots more things to do with maths on the growing sides of things but now I am going to move onto the selling sides of things.

HOW IS MATHS INVOLVED IN SELLING A WATERMELON?

First of all the watermelon is sold per kilo so next the farmer will decide a price for the kilo depending on his farming costs. this involves maths because of MONEY so say the watermelon was $1.25 and the watermelon was 7 kg it would cost $8.75

Before that step the farmer needs to pack a suitable quantity for the boxes. So if he was packing 15 watermelons in each box and was giving 3 boxes to the supermarket it would be 3 groups of 15 and altogether the supermarket would get 45 watermelons, and this is maths because you are multiplying so the sum is 15×3=45

Another one is when you are paying for your watermelon so if it was $8.75 and you gave the cashier lady $10 you would get $1.25 back.

So they are only a couple of reasons maths is involved in growing and selling a watermelon and If you know something else that’s cool about watermelons it doesn’t have to be about maths please leave In the comments down below.
